Dear Parents and Guardians,

  Welcome to the 2017- 2018 school year. As you may know, Mrs. Arellano retired at the end of the last school year. She has been a wonderful mentor to me over the past five years as I worked as a teacher, instructional coach, and assistant principal. I am honored to follow in her footsteps in being the new principal of Orchard School. We are going to have a wonderful school year. The following is some information on the start of school:

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: The first day of school will be on Thursday, August 17, 2017, which is a minimum day. Please see the Orchard School District calendar for more information.

SCHOOL HOURS: For students in grades 1st – 8th, school starts at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 2:35 p.m. On Wednesdays, school starts at the regular time but ends by 12:40 p.m. based on your child’s grade level. For middle school students on Wednesdays only, lunch is optional. If they do not eat lunch on campus on Wednesdays, then dismissal time is at 12:10 p.m.

For Transitional Kindergarten/Kindergarten students, school starts at 8:05 a.m. each day of the school year. From August 17th until October 31st, Kindergarten students will start school at 8:05 a.m. and end at 12:25 p.m. Starting on November 2nd, Kindergarten students will have a full day of school, which will end at 2:25 p.m.

WELCOME MEETING: You are invited to attend a “Welcome to School” parent meeting on Thursday, August 17th from 8:15 – 9:15 a.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. We will discuss our Title I program, volunteer opportunities and upcoming events. I’d like to encourage all Orchard families to volunteer for a minimum of 20 hours this school year.

CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS: The office will post room assignments for all students on Wednesday, August 16th after 5:00 p.m. on the district office and library windows. Middle School students will see only their first period class posted and receive the rest of their schedule on the first day. Please note that we cannot accommodate requests for a particular classroom assignment. Our teachers have made the best decisions as to class placement, while taking into consideration all that they know of each child.

ATTENDANCE/ABSENCE NOTIFICATION: School Attendance is important to student learning. If you know that your child will be absent, please call the Orchard School office at (408) 944 – 0388 to record the absence by 9:00 a.m. If you do not contact the office and your child does not attend school by Friday, September 1, 2017; we will have to drop your child from the school roster.

ARRIVAL/PICK-UP TIME: Safety is our first priority. Please do not send your child to school before 7:45 a.m., as there is no morning supervision until then. School office hours are from 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Be sure to promptly pick up your child at the end of the school day as there is no after-school supervision provided by Orchard Staff. Unattended children are not allowed to wait at the playground before or after school. For a fee, Champions provides before/after-school childcare on campus. STUDENT DROP OFF/PICK-UP: To aid in less congestion in the parking lot, please make sure to use the drive-through lane in the staff parking lot for drop off and pick up. The district parking lot is ONLY for school staff and for the school buses; parents will not be allowed to drop off or pick up students in the district parking lot. Please note that there is limited parking on site for parents or visitors. Should you park on the street, please respect our neighbors and do not block their driveways.

TRANSPORTATION: If you have any questions about transportation and bus schedules, please call the school office at (408) 944 - 0388.

SCHOOL BREAKFAST & LUNCH INFORMATION: Once school starts, you will receive information on free, reduced, and paid school breakfast/lunch options. Please note that a new application must be filled out each year for each student, even if your child received a free or reduced lunch last year. Applications are due by Friday, September 29, 2017. Prices for a school breakfast and lunch are listed below:

Breakfast will be served from 7:45 a.m. – 8:10 a.m. For students in grades 3rd – 8th, there will be a second chance breakfast during your child’s recess. If you qualify for the free meal program, your child will be eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch.
